Homeward is rearchitecting the delivery of health and care in partnership with communities everywhere, starting in rural America. Today, 60 million Americans living in rural communities are facing a crisis of access to care. In the U.S. healthcare system, rural Americans experience significantly poorer clinical outcomes. This trend is rapidly accelerating as rural hospitals close and physician shortages increase, exacerbating health disparities. In fact, Americans living in rural communities suffer a mortality rate 23 percent higher than those in urban communities, in part because of the lack of access to quality care.
Our vision is care that enables everyone to achieve their best health. So, we’re creating a new healthcare delivery model that is purpose-built for rural America and directly addresses the issues that have historically limited access and quality. Homeward supports Medicare-eligible beneficiaries by partnering with health plans, providers, and communities to align incentives – taking full financial accountability for clinical outcomes and the total cost of care across rural counties.
As a public benefit corporation and Certified B Corp™, Homeward’s mission and business model are aligned to address the healthcare, economic, and demographic challenges that make it challenging for rural Americans to stay healthy. Our Homeward Navigation™ platform uses advanced analytics to connect members to the right care and local resources that address social determinants of health and improve holistic health outcomes. Since many rural communities lack adequate clinical capacity, Homeward also employs care teams that supplement local practices and reach people who cannot otherwise access care.
Homeward is co-founded by a leadership team that defined and delivered Livongo’s products, and backed most recently by a $50 million series B co-led by Arch Ventures and Human Capital, with participation from General Catalyst for a total of $70 million in funding. With this leadership team and funding, Homeward is committed to bringing high-quality healthcare to rural communities in need.
The Opportunity
Join us in tackling healthcare for rural America! We’re seeking a Head of Engineering who is passionate about building technology that serves underserved communities. This role is perfect for a hands-on leader who thrives in a dynamic, growing environment and can lead by example, writing code when necessary and shaping the technical strategy of the company.
You will be responsible for guiding our engineering team (currently five members and growing) to deliver high-quality software products. Your ability to drive technical direction, lead solutions architecture, and shape our future tech stack will be critical to our mission. You will partner closely with product, design, and clinical operations to deliver applications that improve the health outcomes of rural Americans.
What You'll Do
- Technical Leadership: Architect, design, and lead the development of scalable software solutions, primarily focusing on front-end development but also managing full-stack and back-end projects as required.
- Solutions Architecture: Drive the evolution of our tech stack, ensuring scalability, reliability, and flexibility. Identify architectural gaps and implement frameworks that align with our current and future needs, including healthcare frameworks for EHR integrations.
- Team Management & Growth: Lead, mentor, and grow a team of engineers, fostering a collaborative and inclusive culture. Develop hiring strategies to support team expansion and performance.
- Hands-on Development: Write code as needed, particularly to set best practices, guide architectural decisions, or contribute to areas of critical need. This may include building frameworks, conducting code reviews, and creating testing strategies.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with product, design, and clinical teams to translate business requirements into technical specifications and ensure that solutions align with company goals.
- Tech Stack Evolution: Lead the transition to an enhanced stack that will support future integrations with healthcare systems (EHRs) and facilitate seamless data exchanges. Current stack includes TypeScript, Postgres, AWS, with a potential move toward Redux or other relevant healthcare frameworks.
- Operational Excellence: Drive best practices for software development, deployment, and scaling across the engineering team.
What You Bring
- 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with 3+ years in a technical leadership role.
- Strong expertise in front-end technologies and frameworks, with experience in building scalable products. Proficiency in TypeScript and AWS is required.
- Proven track record of leading architecture and design for complex systems, with an understanding of healthcare frameworks and the ability to build applications that integrate with Electronic Health Records (EHRs).
- Hands-on coding experience; you're comfortable jumping into code reviews, testing, and problem-solving as needed.
- Experience scaling engineering teams and fostering a high-performance, growth-oriented culture.
- Strong problem-solving skills, a passion for using technology to solve real-world problems, and an interest in healthcare and health equity.
- Ability to work cross-functionally with product, design, and business teams, and to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience in a startup or high-growth environment is a plus.
Bonus Points
- Familiarity with operational frameworks in regulated industries, including data security and compliance (e.g., HIPAA).
- Experience with microservices, serverless architecture, and cloud-native applications.
