Job description

Job Summary:
The Systems Engineer II is a core position in the interdisciplinary field of systems engineering and engineering management, and plays a key role in designing, integrating, and managing systems across the company’s diverse enterprise infrastructure.

Responsibilities:

Scope of the Role 

The Systems Engineer II contributes to the development of engineered systems that combine components to collectively perform necessary functions. The primary focus of the role revolves around the deployment, maintenance, support, monitoring, and upgrades of various technical business systems. Areas of specialty in the Systems Engineering discipline can include DevOps Engineering, Network or Server Engineering/Administration, Database Administration, Application Administration/Integration (such as Workday or other enterprise applications), or other similar roles. The Systems Engineer II has great impact on the company as their work directly relates to improving and maintaining system performance, enhancing technical processes, and driving automation initiatives - all of which are essential to successful business operations.

Systems Engineering  

The Systems Engineer II will have a deeper understanding of the systems and tools than more junior engineers, including a good focus on quality, and are likely to have developed some expertise in their area of focus. This may include several different approaches to solving problems with their area. They will start developing a clearer understanding of “best practices” within the industry and will contribute more often to the design of new projects. They will also understand how their work may impact projects being worked on by other members of their team. The Systems Engineer II is capable of working independently and not being blocked by others. They will see beyond an individual sprint, with an understanding of work that is happening several sprints out.  

 

Individual tasks include:  

  • DevOps Engineering (as applicable):  

  • Streamlining software development and deployment processes 

  • Implementing continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines 

  • Leveraging automation tools to enhance the efficiency and reliability of software systems  

  • Developing, monitoring, alerting, and debugging tools and dashboards  

  • Managing infrastructure and systems with configuration management tools (IaC 

  • Network and Server Engineering/Administration (as applicable):  

  • Designing, configuring, and maintaining the organization's network and server infrastructure 

  • Ensuring network availability, security, and performance optimization 

  • Troubleshooting network-related issues  

  • Database Administration (as applicable):  

  • Managing and optimizing databases for enterprise applications, such as Workday, IBM Power, and other critical systems 

  • Working on database design, performance tuning, backup and recovery, and data security 

  • Ensuring data integrity  

  • Troubleshooting integrations issues escalated by technical support 

  • Enterprise Applications (as applicable): 

  • Defining and optimizing application configuration for enterprise applications, such as Workday, IBM Power, TalkDesk, and other critical systems 

  • Working on application integrations: design, performance tuning, and data security 

  • Developing reports and dashboards for analytics and compliance 

  • Troubleshooting integrations issues escalated by technical support 

  • Analyzing data flows and user feedback for process improvement opportunities 

  • Engaging in ongoing personal study of modern technologies and industry-related knowledge and skills 

 

Engagement and Collaboration 

The Systems Engineer II will work intricately with their teammates and may also collaborate with neighboring teams’ software engineers, product managers, and others. They will start to have some influence on other teammates, while continuing to learn and grow from the mentorship of more senior engineers  

 

Engagement responsibilities include:  

  • Work closely and effectively with teammates, which may include fellow systems engineers, software engineers, program/product managers, software test engineers, and others 

  • Contribute to the implementation of dynamic requirements/initiatives with teammates, cross-team collaborators  

  • Actively participate in team meetings and events  

  • Share on-call/escalation responsibilities with your team 

 

Education, Knowledge, and Experience 

 

  • 2-5 years of industry experience in Systems Engineering, which may include DevOps Engineering, Network or Server Engineering/Administration, Database Administration, Applications Administration/Integration, or similar roles  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent industry experience  

  • Effective troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze and resolve technical issues efficiently 

  • Experience with Jira or related Agile software tools  

  • Knowledge of software development life cycle (SDLC)  

  • Proficiency in scripting languages and automation tools 

  • Willingness to learn new approaches and technologies 

  • Ability to work well with other engineers in a collaborative environment 

  • Attention to detail and quality 

  • Open-minded approach to new ideas and approaches 

  • Willingness to challenge others and be challenged 

  • Share in the goal of creating the best design and architecture possible

Physical Requirements/ Work Environment  

 

Employee must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time, with the physical ability to work at the computer or other sedentary tasks for long periods of time. Employee can conduct duties discreetly and impartially. If working remotely, employee is able to work in a space that allows them to effectively complete their job tasks, including having reliable internet connectivity and the ability to participate effectively while on phone and video calls. Employee has regular and predictable attendance and punctuality.
