JOB SUMMARY
The Business Development Manager (BDM) is responsible for driving the growth and expansion of the department by identifying new business opportunities, developing strategic partnerships, and launching new services and products in the building automation industry. The BDM will play a critical role in shaping and executing the company's business strategies, focusing on market expansion, business growth, and revenue generation.  The BDM oversees the proposal team managing the opportunity pipeline and responding to RFPs.  

The BDM reports to the senior leadership team and collaborates closely with all departments, including engineering and project management.  This role demands a proactive approach in identifying market trends, understanding customer needs, and leveraging industry relationships to achieve business objectives.

On a day-to-day basis, the Business Development Manager is self-directed and responsible for managing their activities in line with established business development goals. Additionally, this role involves actively participating in professional associations and industry groups, presenting at events and webinars, and maintaining a strong online presence through professional networking sites.

This person will communicate and operate in line with organizational goals and values, as well as departmental objectives. 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Strategic Planning and Execution
  • Develop and implement comprehensive business development strategies to drive market expansion and business growth.
  • Identify and evaluate market opportunities including geographic expansion, new product lines, and service offerings.
  • Conduct thorough market analysis to stay ahead of industry trends and competitive landscape.
  • Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with key industry contractors, vendors, and systems integrators.

Lead Generation and Client Acquisition
  • Identify potential clients and generate high-quality leads through various channels, including networking, cold calling, and digital marketing.
  • Utilize CRM tools to track and manage leads, ensuring effective follow-up and conversion strategies.

Client Relationship Management
  • Build and nurture strong relationships with key decision-makers and influencers within target companies.
  • Conduct high-level meetings and presentations to introduce the company’s capabilities and value propositions.
  • Ensure exceptional levels of client engagement and satisfaction to foster long-term relationships.

Market and Industry Engagement
  • Represent the company at industry events, conferences, and trade shows.
  • Build and leverage a network of industry contacts to stay informed about market developments.
  • Actively participate in professional associations and industry groups to enhance the company’s visibility and credibility.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Collaborate with internal teams (cross department) to ensure alignment of business development strategies with company capabilities and offerings.
  • Coordinate with engineering and project management teams to ensure successful delivery and budgeting for projects and services.

Performance Monitoring and Reporting
  • Track and report on business development activities and outcomes, providing regular updates to senior management.
  • Analyze performance data to identify trends, opportunities, and areas for improvement.
  • Develop and implement action plans to enhance business development performance.

Strategic Initiatives and Innovation
  • Identify and lead strategic initiatives to drive innovation and differentiation in the market.
  • Evaluate and launch new products and services, ensuring they meet market demands and align with the company’s strategic goals.
  • Foster a culture of innovation within the team to continuously explore new opportunities and strategies.

Networking and Industry Engagement
  • Actively participate in professional associations and industry groups to expand the company’s network.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to present at industry events and webinars to raise the company’s profile.
  • Build and maintain a strong online presence through LinkedIn and other professional networking sites.
Proposal and Pipeline Management
  • Develop and maintain pipeline of opportunities using company tools
  • Oversee proposal team activities including RFP responses, qualifications packages, proposal creation, subcontractor RFPs, estimating, and QC reviews
  • Mentor and train proposal team staff

Completion of Assigned Tasks and Deliverables on Time and on Budget
Performs Other Related Duties as Assigned

Requirements
POSITION REQUIREMENTS (ADVANCED LEVEL FOR ALL THE FOLLOWING) 
  • Understanding of building automation systems and related technologies and role in construction industry for commercial data center / technology facilities and light industrial facilities 
  • Development and managing of BD budget
  • Skilled at using CRM software tools
  • Skilled at using MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams), along with exceptional organizational skills for file management
  • Skilled in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail
  • Ability to work successfully in a remote environment thru effective communication and organizational skills, self-motivation, proactiveness and resourcefulness in a distraction free workspace
  • Ability to identify and analyze complex problems, evaluate alternatives and implement effective solutions
  • Ability to analyze and prepare documents, reports and correspondence
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form (technical and non-technical information) 
  • Ability to communicate effectively directly with clients and at times serve as primary point of client contact
  • Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with little supervision 
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet close deadlines 
  • Ability to effectively plan and delegate the work of others
  • Organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
  • Up to 50%, this may include travel to any or all 50 US states 
  • Travel is defined as physically leaving home on behalf of business activities including but not limited to client sites, meetings with other employees, meeting for business development purposes, running errands on behalf of the business, attending industry conferences, etc.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, business, or related discipline 

PLUS

  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in business development in building automation or related construction industry.  Proven track record in business strategy, business development, and client management.
