The primary focus of the SMB Underwriting Supervisor is to support in facilitating  the department’s Day and/or Night Underwriting Leadership Team with all aspects of production related processes,  escalated underwriting issues and staff related concerns.  This role will be well versed in North underwriting policy and procedures, comfortable in a fast-paced environment, comfortable in a leadership role, and understands that leading by example is an essential component of the department’s continued success.

The SMB Underwriting Supervisor must be a qualified, motivated and experienced merchant credit card card payment processing underwriter who reviews, analyzes and makes confident decisions on accounts with exposure up to $250,000, with the ability to utilize exceptional managerial skills for communicating with and motivating a team.  The role will also be a key contributor in overseeing the Interactive underwriting process and team members as seen fit by the Managers, Sr Managers,  and the Director of SMB Underwriting. The SMB Underwriting Supervisor will directly manage a staff of SMB Underwriters.

What you'll do:

  • Handle initial supervisor/escalation calls or emails with exposure up to $250,000 as received from any of our internal or external customers, and make recommendations to the Underwriting leadership team when decisions are above ascribed credit authority.
  • Proficient at making decisions on retail, moto or internet applicants with up to $250,000 in total exposure and making recommendations (verbal or written) for merchants with over $250,000 in total exposure.
  • Lead a team of Underwriters including directing staff and , production workflow, coaching, counseling and/or enforcement of company policies and procedures as they relate to performance, and  training, disciplinary processes and performance appraisal processes.
  • With the support of other Underwriting Leadership, coach and develop team members; identifying promotion and growth opportunities for staff; executing progressive discipline.
  • Provide all sales partners with a communication channel via phone support as well as an additional layer of review and discretion to find a solution for accounts that have been pended, declined, or withdrawn, these smart exceptions should lead to more approvals.
  • Analyze a wide variety of applicants and business types in multiple credit card processing environments (both card present and non-card present such as mail order or internet applicants where risk is higher), wide range of processing amounts, standard and non-standard documentation, and financial statements.
  • Work production overflow as needed to support volume spikes and/or short staffing, weekend and month end situations. When necessary perform the initial underwriting for merchant accounts in any underwriting queue.
  • Review and make recommendations to leadership in regards to department policies and procedures based on changing industry trends or process adjustments.
  • Execute against Credit Policy driven collateral strategies to minimize losses by implementing reserves, sourcing letters of credit and/or administering funding holds.
  • Drive increased submission volume by making our sales partners feel like we're doing everything we can to find a way to approve their submissions regardless of the quality.
  • Other duties as assigned by ERM Leadership

What we need from you:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Criminal Justice (or equivalent work experience)
  • Minimum 5 years underwriting experience in the merchant credit card payment processing industry.
  • Leadership experience in an underwriting capacity.
  • Ability to delegate work in a way that empowers ownership.
  • Exceptional continuous improvement skills; has a knack for identifying and seizing opportunities for synergy and integrations.
  • Excellent conflict resolution skills and emotional intelligence to be able to manage relationships with applicants, internal staff and external customers (agents, vendors and key business partners relationships)
  • Must be comfortable and confident in handling a position of authority when making underwriting decisions, as well as executing accurate judgment in regards to interactions with Sales Partners and merchants over the phone and through email
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and handle combination of relationships with applicants, internal staff and external customers (agents, vendors and key business partners relationships)
  • Critical thinking, troubleshooting, problem solving skills with the ability to independently solve problems using data
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of staff, management, vendors, sales agents, and merchants
  • Team-oriented individual with a positive attitude who enjoys working with and for others
  • Ability to adapt priorities for peak periods to ensure consistency of service levels for sales partners and merchants
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule in support of departmental needs

Salary Range: $64,000 - 110,000 USD Annual
