Essential Job Functions

  • Outline, write, and revise evidence-based content about child welfare, mental health, substance use, or related health and social sciences topics for a range of audiences, including policymakers, health professionals, and consumers 
  • Ensure both representation of the client’s voice in all products and that each product has "one-voice" consistency with tailored language to reach diverse audiences
  • Collaborate with creative, multimedia, web, and production teams to develop well-formatted, accessible, engaging content suitable for dissemination via various channels
  • Compile substantive feedback from clients, reviewers, subject matter experts, and other contributors, organizing and incorporating it in revised drafts accurately
  • Conduct searches of the academic and gray literature, prepare literature reviews, and compile a solid evidence base for content under development
  • Perform copy editing, proofreading, and fact-checking as needed to ensure that content is error-free, has clear structure and logical flow, accurately reflects the evidence base, and aligns with relevant style guidelines

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications plus at least 5 years’ experience writing and editing content related to child/family welfare, mental health, and/or substance use; 8+ years’ experience will be considered in lieu of a bachelor’s degree
  • Working knowledge of the child welfare and/or behavioral health service systems, policies, and practices; familiarity with a range of topics related to prevention, treatment, recovery, safety, permanency, and child and family well-being
  • Demonstrated writing skills, as proven through work samples highlighting content across a range of formats and publication channels with a strong focus on web-based content
  • Proficiency in identifying, reviewing, and critiquing topic-specific research literature, including familiarity with common academic/scientific literature search databases, as well as an ability to assess the quality of evidence/recommendations and to synthesize findings into new or updated content 
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a public trust clearance (i.e., Federal Government background check)

Candidates with experience in the following are strongly preferred:

  • Experience working in a federal contracting environment and on cross-functional teams, including state and federal agency members
  • Experience with 508 compliance requirements, including using accessibility tools such as JAWS, Dragon, ZoomText, etc.
  • Experience with Federal plain language requirements
  • Experience using content management platforms such as MS Project, MS Planner, SmartSheet, Mural, or similar.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods at a desk or computer workstation. 
  • Regularly uses a computer, keyboard, and mouse. 
  • Normal or corrected vision to read documents, view computer screens, and perform tasks that require visual accuracy.  
  • Ability to hear and understand spoken information in person and over the phone. 
  • Minimal lifting and carrying may be required, typically light office supplies or documents.
  • Ability to move within the office environment to access equipment, files, and interact with colleagues.  
  • Ability to handle occasional stress related to deadlines, workloads, or challenging tasks.
