Job description

This career professional specialist contributes to the payroll function by ensuring compliance through conducting state and local registrations, creating, implementing, and streamlining processes, reviewing and spot-checking payroll preparation, researching exception items, and taking corrective action, coding and investigating variances for benefit payments, and reporting accurately to all required tax entities. Using seasoned accounting knowledge, this specialist may provide leadership and expertise to protect Compassion's financial integrity by ensuring tax registrations in various agencies as well as full compliance with regulatory issues such as local taxes and unemployment insurance requirements.

What will you do?

  • Act as an advocate to raise the awareness of the needs of children. Understands Christ’s mandate to protect children. Commit to and prioritize child protection considerations in all decision-making, tasks and activities across the ministry. Abide by all behavioral expectations in Compassion’s Statement of Commitment to Child Protection and Code of Conduct. Report any concerns of abuse, neglect or exploitation of children through Compassion’s internal reporting process and appropriately support responses to incidents if they occur.

  • Uphold and engage in Compassion’s core Cultural Behaviors.

  • Ensure that Compassion is registered and complying with all payroll related issues in each location. This requires completing significant, detailed research regarding taxes, tax rates changes, and other payroll items within multiple country locations with Compassion staff. Using professional discretion, apply Compassion demographic and business situation to satisfy broad requirements in each jurisdiction.

  • Ensure accurate Workday records with all local municipal registration details such as income tax, statutory requirements, and other items required for payroll compliance in the jurisdiction. This often requires collaborating with Systems, Finance, and Legal staff to ensure technology and processes are coordinated with legal requirements and best practices. May lead special projects within the payroll department.

  • Audit all payroll tax accounts during each cycle and research variances. Ensure accuracy and proper adjustment as required. This essential function includes overseeing quarterly and annual tax reconciliations for multiple countries in their region. Conduct audits of government forms and support ad hoc external audits.

  • Ensure required benefits and other leaves comply and are properly established in Workday. Collaborate with Finance and Benefits team to ensure process, policies, and cost charges satisfy business requirements and are accounted for efficiently.

  • Ensure systems are in place to maintain accurate records of payroll transactions in compliance with applicable laws and best practices. Process payroll tax withholding preparation, reconciliation, and payment in multiple locations.

  • Evaluate payroll and timekeeping processes, make changes based on the findings and ensure appropriate procedures and documentation are updated. Implement changes in employment policies to accommodate unusual circumstances and changing organizational needs. Enforce relevant corporate finance policies and procedures and employee handbook policies.

  • Audit and conduct reconciliations each payroll cycle. Oversee the correction of issues including instructing support staff, coordinating with Finance, Benefits, Systems teams. Modify charge codes, processes, and automated system as necessary to maintain accurate and efficient payroll processing and interactions with other systems.

  • May coach and provide expertise, and may oversee the work of other specialists and support staff in the payroll discipline.
