The Director- Strategic Finance serves as a strategic finance partner to the PPD finance, commercial, and operation teams through in-depth analysis and insight of cost and pricing trends, pricing strategy, and commercial term development for PPD businesses (clinical, labs and patient advisory services) and joint service offerings with other Thermo Fisher Scientific divisions. The role creates value by optimizing commercial decisions and commercial term constructs.

The role works across functional teams to develop efficient processes and frameworks that guide leadership to make informed decisions and implement strategic pricing initiatives. Success in this role requires the application of P&L and pricing analyses to assess operational and commercial performance and develop processes that influence organizational behavior.

Key objectives include:

  • Strategic finance partners to develop commercial constructs and complete pricing analysis for strategic opportunities and partnerships.
  • Partner with finance, commercial and operations teams to evaluate and adjust rates across service areas, including methodology and competitive benchmarking.
  • Develop, analyze and recommend MSA terms and partnership pricing, including joint bids and comprehensive offerings with other Thermo Fisher business units, such as Pharma Services Group (PSG).
  • Collaborate with finance, commercial and operations to manage pricing strategy, profit margin targets and discount approval processes by service area and segment.
  • Work with finance teams to develop service area standard costing and margin profiles.
  • Coordinate with sales operations and finance to track and analyze commercial and financial metrics associated with proposals and authorizations.
  • Work with FP&A to track actual project margin versus bid margin on an on-going basis for projects and to help inform pricing strategies.
  • Supporting commercial finance leader for process improvement initiatives to streamline and improve proposal or mod process.

Qualifications - External

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent and relevant formal academic / vocational qualifications
  • 10+ years of relevant experience
  • 5+ years of management responsibility
  • MBA Degree (preferred but not required)

Skills and Abilities:

  • Experienced client negotiator with in-depth knowledge of pricing terms
  • Proactive leader with strong business acumen and intellectual curiosity
  • Ability to exercise judgment and decision-making; Supported by superior skills in financial research and analysis, financial modeling, and risk management.
  • Ability to lead and manage large project teams including a demonstrated track record of setting goals, communicating plans, monitoring progress, and achieving results in a high-performing team environment.
  • Proven business acumen with ability to understand complex organizational structures and environments.
  • Ability to function as an effective and respected partner to internal clients at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence at all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills (including research, reporting and analytical skills)
  • Advanced level of skill in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint for analysis and presentation of data
  • Strategic and creative thinking; Strong communications skills with storytelling approach to presentations
  • Proven ability to effectively delegate and balance work and deliver against competing demands.
