The Manager, Savings is responsible for overseeing the administration, compliance, and strategic management of Starbucks’ nonqualified deferred compensation plan. This role ensures that all plan activities comply with applicable laws and regulations, supports partner engagement, and collaborates with key stakeholders to align the plan with the organization’s overall compensation strategy. This role also supports communications efforts for all US savings programs.
Key Responsibilities
Plan Administration
- Oversee day-to-day operations of Starbucks; Management Deferred Compensation Plan (MDCP), including enrollment, deferrals, distributions, and participant communication.
- Ensure proper and timely execution of partner elections, deferrals, and payouts in accordance with the plan’s terms.
- Manage partner relationships, including vendors, and internal partners, ensuring efficient plan operation.
Compliance & Reporting
- Ensure compliance with all relevant tax codes (e.g., Section 409A), ERISA (where applicable), and other regulatory requirements.
- Prepare and file required reports, such as annual 409A valuations and deferred compensation disclosures.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date plan documents, ensuring timely amendments to reflect legal and regulatory changes.
- Monitor and ensure the company’s plan remains compliant with internal policies and external audit standards.
Partner Support
- Serve as the primary point of contact for partners, providing education on plan features, enrollment, and distribution options.
- Address partner inquiries regarding plan benefits, account statements, tax implications, and distribution timing.
- Develop and update partner communication materials, such as guides and FAQs to enhance understanding of the plan.
- Provide leadership in developing the annual savings benefit partner communications calendar and execute this plan across all savings programs. Working with internal and external partners.
Strategic Plan Management
- Collaborate with HR, Finance, and Legal teams to ensure that the MDCP aligns with Starbucks’ overall executive compensation and retention strategies.
- Analyze plan participation trends and recommend enhancements to ensure the plan remains competitive and attractive to key partners.
- Work with financial and legal advisors to assess the financial impact of the MDCP on the company and propose improvements where necessary.
Risk Management
- Proactively identify and mitigate potential risks related to plan administration, compliance, and partner disputes.
- Ensure secure handling of partner data and manage confidentiality and privacy requirements related to executive compensation.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Human Resources, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in compensation or benefits management, with a focus on deferred compensation plans.
- Strong knowledge of tax and legal regulations related to nonqualified deferred compensation (e.g., IRC Section 409A).
- Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
Key Skills
- In-depth understanding of nonqualified deferred compensation plans and their tax implications.
- Ability to manage complex projects and ensure accurate, timely execution.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to interpret and apply legal and tax regulations.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for working with parts and cross-functional teams

- If you are working in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND, or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above. For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above.
The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
