Youth Substance Use Treatment Counselor

The Substance Use Treatment Counselor is responsible for providing direct outpatient substance use treatment services to youth and their families. This position provides services that include individual therapy, case management, collateral and care coordination with other providers working with clients. The Counselor delivers services with attention to cultural relevance and sensitivity.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Maintain a caseload of SUD counseling clients and facilitate regular individual counseling sessions with each caseload participant.
  • Provide culturally sensitive, client-centered individual, group, and family counseling and rehabilitation services to youth and their families.
  • Facilitate referrals to community resources and perform case management services.
  • Develop culturally relevant assessment and treatment plans.
  • Complete all documentation per Medi-Cal, Santa Clara County and AACI standards within expected deadlines.
  • Participate in clinical supervisions, consultations, team meetings, trainings, and after hours rotation.
  • Licensed Clinicians only- Complete and maintain LPS 5150 Authorization certification and provide officer of the day support.
  • Complete other related duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Drug and Alcohol Registration or Certification recognized by DHCS (e.g. CCAPP, CADTP) or Registered with the Board of Behavioral Sciences as AMFT, ASW or APCC.
  • One year or more of direct clinical experience providing substance use treatment to youth.
  • Experience with trauma-informed and evidenced-based practices (i.e., CBT, DBT, ACT).

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Capability to perform the duties and responsibilities described above.
  • Knowledge of DSM-V criteria for diagnosing behavioral health illnesses.
  • Cultural Awareness, knowledge of cultural issues, community resources, and family dynamics.
  • Understanding of the legal and ethical requirements set by the board of licensure.
  • Knowledge of community and county resources to facilitate referrals and coordination with appropriate agencies.
  • Clinical Judgment: ability to exercise independent clinical judgment within the scope of program responsibilities.
  • Ability to implement evidenced-based techniques to address client’s symptomatology and functional impairments.
  • Understanding of boundaries to maintain clear and consistent boundaries with clients and their families
  • Proficient writing skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Driving Requirements: This position may require driving. Must have a valid California driver's license, current personal auto insurance, and a driving record that meets the agency's auto liability policy requirements.
  • Language Skills: verbal and written fluency in English is required. Bilingual skills in Spanish, Mandarin, or Vietnamese, are preferred but not required.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Working conditions

This job requires you to be in the community, in client’s homes, and other community partner sites. Work is often conducted in an office environment. Basic safety precautions and use of protective clothing or gear may be required. Working with clients who are seriously mentally ill, or high risk may increase exposure to secondary trauma. Driving is essential to the function of this job. The job requires travel up to 25% of the time.
