Job description

As a Payroll Tax Expert, you will be responsible for ensuring accurate and timely processing of payroll taxes, staying compliant with federal, state, and local regulations, and providing expert guidance on payroll tax-related issues.  You will also research and provide guidance for international payroll tax issues.

What you’ll do

Payroll Tax Compliance:

  • Ensure accurate calculation, withholding, and remittance of payroll taxes including federal, state, and local taxes.
  • Prepare and file payroll tax returns (e.g., 941, 940, state unemployment tax returns) in a timely manner.
  • Conduct tax research and stays updated on tax law changes.
  • Provide expert tax advice on payroll-related matters, including tax withholdings, deductions, and credits.

Tax Reporting:

  • Prepare and review payroll tax reports, including W-2s, 1099s, and other necessary documentation.
  • Assist with year-end tax reporting and audits.
  • Respond to IRS and state tax agency inquiries and resolve any issues that arise.

Reconciliation and Analysis:

  • Reconcile payroll tax accounts and resolve discrepancies.
  • Analyze payroll tax data to identify trends and potential issues.

Internal Controls and Documentation:

  • Develop and implement internal controls related to payroll tax processes.
  • Maintain accurate and organized records of payroll tax documents and filings.

Collaboration and Support:

  • Work closely with the payroll team to ensure seamless payroll processing.
  • Provide guidance and support to HR and finance departments on payroll tax matters.
  • Perform payroll tax audits and research and respond to inquiries from regulatory agencies.

Process Improvement:

  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and automation in payroll tax processes.
  • Implement best practices to enhance efficiency and accuracy.

This might describe you

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Proven experience in payroll tax compliance and administration.
  • In-depth knowledge of payroll tax laws and regulations at the federal, state, and local levels.
  • Experience with payroll software and systems (e.g., Workday, ADP or similar).
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Certification as a Payroll Professional (CPP) or similar is a plus.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to challenges.
  • Willingness to stay current with changes in tax laws and payroll practices.

Other things to note

This position can be worked as remote position within the United States.

Familiarity with public company requirements, including Sarbanes Oxley and key regulations, if applicable. For SOX compliant roles, responsible for designing, executing, and documenting internal controls where they have been identified as owners to prevent errors in financial reporting, processes, and business operations. Including attestation to the completeness, accuracy, and compliance of all financial reporting data, where applicable.
