About this role
NORESCO is seeking a Senior Building Performance Engineer/Analyst to join our Codes and Standards Team with a focus on energy codes compliance software development. You will be a member of the Sustainability Division of NORESCO and will execute projects with the Codes and Standards team members. The person selected to fill this position shall have extensive knowledge of building science, energy-efficient building systems and strategies, energy modeling using EnergyPlusTM, energy codes (IECC and/or Title 24, Part 6.), and be able to mentor junior staff in energy simulation software (development and validation) projects. Aptitude for and experience with project management and client management is required.
As a member of NORESCO’s Codes and Standards team, you will have broad impact on building energy and green codes in the U.S, including in leading states such as California, Massachusetts, and New York, as well as on national building energy codes. This team includes engaged and talented individuals, possessing diverse and specialized skills covering a wide range of capabilities within energy and green building policy. The position will leverage existing client relationships providing you with limitless opportunities for growth and having an impact shaping the future of building decarbonization in the U.S. The primary focus for this role will be to advance California’s Building Energy Code Compliance (CBECC) software, which is created by the State of California to support demonstration of compliance with the statewide Building Energy Efficiency Standards during the building’s permitting process. CBECC is taxpayer funded and therefore offered to the market at no cost.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and conduct energy efficiency analyses using energy modeling software (EnergyPlusTM and CBECC) and applied techniques, cost-effectiveness analyses, and other analyses related to energy policy
- Provide technical reviews of energy simulations and other analyses, and strategic guidance, to team members
- Provide clear and well-written memoranda and reports to various clients (investor-owned utilities, state energy commissions, building owners, architects, engineers) regarding energy policy and other analyses
- Ensure technical quality and accurate technical content of project-related documents and provide oversight and review of supporting staff
- Meet and contact clients as appropriate to discuss methods, and present results and recommendations
- Support business development efforts
- Develop and manage project budgets, schedules, and tasks with minimal oversight
- Liaise with other functional / technical teams and clients
- Occasional (0-10%) business travel
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Engineering or Technology and 7+ years’ work experience in Building Energy Efficiency
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology and 10+ years’ work experience in Building Energy Efficiency
- 3+ years working experience with one or more of the following building energy codes: CA Title 24, ASHRAE Standard 90.1, and/or IECC
- 3+ years working experience with complex building mechanical systems and state-of-the-art energy efficiency technologies and applications
Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree in mechanical, electrical, environmental, architectural, or related sustainability field
- Extensive knowledge of Title 24, ASHRAE Standard 90.1, IECC, and other energy codes and standards
- Understanding of key building decarbonization strategies and systems, including high performance building envelopes, heat pumps, and heat pump water heaters
- Expertise in building systems including architectural, envelope, mechanical, electrical, controls, water, and special systems
- Demonstrated ability to write technical reports, papers, and provide presentations to knowledgeable audiences
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Experience with developing and validating novel modeling approaches for new building technologies, strategies, and policy responses
- Experience with EnergyPlusTM, OpenStudio®, and eQuest energy modeling software; experience with CBECC compliance software is a plus
- Experience with large-scale simulations and data analysis/visualization, and the supporting technologies (Python/Ruby, Tableau/Pandas, AWS/Docker, DBMS flavors); familiarity with revision control systems (e.g. SourceForge, Git) and source code management a plus
- Working knowledge of and experience with the architectural design process and all phases of design and construction from pre-design to construction administration
