Job description

Program: Adult Education and Literacy

Position: ESL Instructor

Location: Kilgore College-Longview

Status: Part-Time

Schedule: Tuesday and Thursday; 5:45 PM-9:00 PM

Salary: $19.00 per hour; no benefits are attached to this position

Mission: To provide adult learners with the tools needed for success in education, workforce, and life.

Duties/Responsibilities: 

  1. Curriculum Development: Develop and implement engaging and effective ESL curriculum aligned with Texas Adult Education and Literacy Content Standards, Kilgore College Adult Education and Literacy Syllabi, and learner needs.
  2. Instruction: Deliver high-quality ESL instruction using a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, discussions, group activities, individualized tutoring, and online learning programs.
  3. Assessment: Assess student learning through a variety of methods, including TWC Adult Education and Literacy-approved assessments, quizzes, tests, and projects, to monitor progress and provide feedback.
  4. Participant Support: Provide individual and small-group support to help students overcome learning challenges and achieve their English language goals. Develop strategies to increase participant retention and engagement. Provide personalized support and encouragement to help participants stay motivated and achieve their goals. Actively engage participants in learning and create a positive and supportive classroom environment.
  5. Collaboration: Collaborate with other adult education staff, community partners, and employers to ensure that instruction is relevant and meets the needs of students.
  6. Professional Development:  Participate in professional development activities to stay current with best practices in adult education and math instruction. As required by TWC Adult Education and Literacy, instructors are required to complete 15 hours annually.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, education, or a related field
  • Experience teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to adult learners
  • Strong understanding of adult learning principles and effective instructional strategies
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse and inclusive environment
  • Proficiency in using technology for instruction and assessment
  • Positive role model
  • Ability to work with a diverse student and employee population
  • Proficiency with computers and technology (e.g. Microsoft Office applications, Google, Zoom, etc.)
  • Experience teaching adults and/or facilitating groups
  • Experience working with educationally and/or economically disadvantaged adults
  • Experience working in collaborative or team environments
  • Manages time effectively
  • Maintains confidentiality of records
  • Dress is appropriate to the work environment
  • Maintains a safe, orderly, and clean environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in adult education, ESL education, or a related field
  • Certification in adult education or ESL instruction
  • Experience working with adult learners from diverse backgrounds
  • Knowledge of adult education standards and assessment tools
