About the Role
The Director, Total Rewards, owns the design, implementation, and management of Tides Network and Tides Center benefits and rewards programs supporting over 1200 employees across the United States. The incumbent will work in partnership with the Talent Management team to inform the integrity of compensation, pay equity, and innovative and supportive recognition programs.
As a member of the People Leadership Team, the Director leads employee well-being programming and initiatives including 403(b), medical, dental, vision, leave of absence, health and flexible spending accounts, along with additional ancillary benefits. The Director facilitates people-centered interactions with all stakeholders demonstrating a high degree of empathy and commitment to Tides’ values and JEDI principles in each interaction. The incumbent ensures the Total Rewards strategy is in alignment with Tides strategic and operating plans, ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.
The Director, Total Rewards reports directly to the Senior Director, People Operations and HRIS and leads a team currently comprised of two Benefits Specialists. This leader thrives on continuous improvement within highly dynamic environments and possesses exceptional attention to detail and customer service skills.
What you will Do
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high performing team of motivated and impactful professionals committed to Tides mission, vision, and values while fostering a collaborative and inclusive culture.
- Partner with our Benefits Broker to conduct benefit market trends, regulatory changes, and best practices in total rewards.
- Thorough knowledge of 403b regulations along with analytical, critical thinking, statistical and problem-solving skills and the ability to report various analytics and compliance as needed.
- Take ownership of the Tides Retirement committee by working with our retirement plan administrator, co-fiduciary, and consultants to facilitate meetings for continuous improvements within our plans.
- Develop and execute an innovative, strategic, and progressive benefits strategies rooted in a whole-person approach to personal and professional well-being.
- Nurtures relationships with operational partners including employee resource groups, executive team members, and people leaders.
- Work with ADP to ensure all practices comply with federal, state, and local regulations and oversee the preparation of required regulatory reports and filings.
- Partners closely with Finance to ensure effective decision making and finances are in place for all total rewards programming.
- Informs and maintains the total rewards philosophy and establishes policies, practices, and procedures to ensure appropriate application and understanding.
- Ensures all total rewards are aligned with organization values and remote first environment with employees across a multi-state landscape along with ensuring benefit plans are cost effective, competitive, and aligned with employee needs.
- Lead and communicate annual open enrollment design, implementation, successful roll out and lead vendor engagement/relationship management.
- Design and implement a full suite of benefits for Tidesters and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Partner with our Benefits Broker and our benefit partners to foster routine lines of communication, reporting, and customer triage.
- Partner with our payroll department to ensure employees are setup correctly with their elected benefits as well as provide reports for employee leave of absence compensation
- Negotiate contracts and oversee partnerships with our benefit vendors

- Designable to design, document, and roll out benefit policies and procedures as well as desktop instructions for accomplishing work.
- Utilize data-driven insights to support the People Team and Leadership in making informed benefits decisions. Demonstrate commitment to social justice and leading justice and equity-focused issue areas.
- Possess strong financial and business acumen and the ability to understand the short and long-term financial impact of total rewards practices.
- Bring strong change management skills and the ability to steward equitable and sustainable change.
- Bring a track record of demonstrating trauma informed and emotional intelligent solutions
- Demonstrate expertise in total rewards strategies including benefits management that drive well-being.
- Bring experience developing successful Total Rewards strategies for both for and non-profit companies preferred.
- Demonstrate strong analytical skills and financial acumen.
- Demonstrate strong cross-functional relationship-building skills.
- Demonstrate strong operational background with the ability to manage complex projects.
- Lead with a growth mindset and focus on continuous improvement.
- Bring a proven track record of strategic leadership and successful implementation of total rewards programs, with strong knowledge of relevant laws and regulations (e.g., FLSA, FMLA, ERISA, COBRA).
Ideal Experience
- 10+ years of progressive experience in a complex organization, with 5+ years leading benefits strategy. Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent years of related work experience can be substituted for a college degree. Academic credentials will not take the place of robust and relevant leadership experience.
- Certification in Human Resources (e.g., SHRM or HRCI) and/or benefits (e.g., CEBS), preferred.
- Experience planning, designing, developing, testing, and deploying benefit plans within benefits module. Experience with ADP Workforce Now, preferred.
- Leadership experience in a union-represented environment preferred.
Compensation
Tides is committed to providing a competitive compensation package. We value pay equity and account for factors such as your location within the U.S., your skills and your relevant experience, and we will not ask for your salary history.
Your starting salary will fall into one of three ranges:
● $132,600 - $165,800 (Most of the United States)
● $144,700 - $180,900 (Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington D.C. metro areas)
● $159,200 - $199,000 (New York City & San Francisco metro areas)
