Job description

Are you passionate about leveraging your deep technical leadership to accelerate impact in Microsoft's Education business, and to support global students, educators, and academic institutions with their digital transformation? If so, the Worldwide Public Sector (WWPS) team at Microsoft needs you! We are looking for talented, experienced professionals with a passion for supporting global Education customers. This could be your next great career opportunity!

At Microsoft, we have a clear mission – to empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more. That mission resonates with us in the Worldwide Public Sector Education team, where we are dedicated to empowering students, educators, and academic institutions around the world. Our customers include K-12, Higher Education, Academic Research, Academic Medical Centers, Museums, and Libraries. We work across the local, national, and regional levels, and this is a global role.

The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) - Education, Worldwide Public Sector is responsible for defining, leading, and owning technical strategy and technical preparedness across our Education industry verticals, and supporting technical Go-To-Market (GTM) and capture activities for our Education business. You will be part of a high-performance Education industry team, working with partners and peers across the Microsoft enterprise, including industry, sales, engineering, marketing, and more.

In your role as the Education CTO, you will bring together broad technology knowledge, business acumen, executive presence, capture and GTM know-how, and technical roadmapping skills to provide strategic technical direction and leadership for our industry. You will provide technical leadership for our Education industry strategy supporting both near and long-term business goals. You will influence both internally and externally to position the Microsoft Education business for success – and ultimately, to drive digital transformation success for our global education customers.

  • Synthesizes broad findings into insights across a division, including implications that inform business decisions on complex issues, leveraging executive presence to influence decisions and proactively driving solutions to high-impact strategic questions and unaddressed opportunities. Identifies and scopes expansive ideas for company strategy, often missed by others; leverages insights to develop recommendations and provide thought leadership (e.g., trend identification, implications of competitor moves) around potential future growth opportunities and strategic issues for Microsoft. Sells value of new efforts to business partners and/or senior leadership. Guides team through development of frameworks and methodologies to drive problem solving and insights.

Communication

  • Ensures communication of insights to senior business leaders (e.g., Engineering, Solution, and Delivery Teams) and conveys viewpoints through written documents (e.g., memos, reports) and influence models (e.g., meetings, presentations) through minimal iterations of feedback and vetting; builds end-to-end storylines and creates outlines across multiples projects for less experienced colleagues to leverage. Influences senior decision making by providing communications, challenging ideas, and adapting messages to complex nuances as needed. Communicates value of new efforts to business partners and/or senior leadership.

Business Partner Relationships

  • Manages key points of contact with internal technical teams (e.g., Engeering, Solution, and Delivery Teams); manages and cultivates relationships with senior internal leaders (e.g., GM-level, CVP, CEO). Acts as an advisor to senior leadership as a domain expert within Strategy team and greater Microsoft, leveraging deep technical/product knowledge, organizational context, and market awareness to guide less experienced colleagues and inform strategic business decisions. Demonstrates influences through partners across multiple divisions. Provides career mentorship to less experienced colleagues and is sought out by others for guidance and education. Identifies compelling technical differentiations and positions the team to carry them out through business cases and roadmap planning.

Project Leadership

  • Manages multiple Strategy projects and teams across organizational boundaries as a project lead through goals, deliverables, feedback, resource balancing, and timing expectations; proactively identifies complex roadblocks and address them. Initiates and drives multiple projects and topic areas including project plans, recommendations, impact, and syndication across groups. Identifies, evaluates, and proposes new project work/deals based on unmet needs.

Team Development

  • Drives a positive, cohesive team culture across project and Strategy team; develops less experienced team members and peers. Mentors less experienced colleagues by providing coaching and apprenticeship; solicits feedback from internal partners and provides feedback to team members. Owns recruiting and onboarding efforts for Strategy team members by conducting interviews, making decisions on candidates, overseeing onboarding, supporting team member career transitions. Provides team leadership by identifying opportunities for improvement and driving the mission for the team. Acts as an inspirational mentor and thought leader to the entire Strategy team and broader Microsoft.

Additional Responsibilities Include
