Kairos Power is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world’s transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal to dramatically improve people’s quality of life while protecting the environment. This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.

Job Summary

Reporting to the VP, Modeling and Simulation, the Manager, Safety Analysis lead for the Safety Analysis team, overseeing activities crucial for licensing and Research and Development (R&D) at Kairos Power. This role involves providing technical leadership, managing Safety Analysis personnel, and developing innovative new methodologies to demonstrate the safety of Kairos Power’s KP-FHR technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise and ensure regulatory compliance, maintaining high standards of quality for departmental tasks
  • Update and maintains safety analysis models tools/infrastructure to support ongoing safety analysis functions
  • Leads and provides safety analyses and studies to meet program and project requirements
  • Provides technical oversight and ensures technical excellence through the review of project tasks and deliverables to ensure superior quality
  • Partners closely with the System Design and Technology Development Design Leads to ensure alignment of designs and the safety case strategy for the KP-FHR technology
  • Ensure technical compliance is achieved within established budget and on schedule
  • Develop and maintain safety analysis methodologies, procedures, and work instructions
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws
  • Oversee team performance, including hiring, training, mentoring and performance evaluations
  • Provide cross-functional support to other teams and provide influence to safety on operational and physical design choices
  • Execute and meet organizational and department goals
  • Creates an environment focused on continuous improvement and employee accountability
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Master of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering or related background, PHD in Nuclear Engineering is preferred
  • 5+ years’ experience in nuclear engineering with demonstrated safety analysis, familiarity with USNRC regulatory and multi-discipline knowledge required, 1-2 years supervisory/management experience preferred
  • Ability to develop guidelines, processes, and metrics that promote successful completion of program and project milestones by employees within the department
  • Knowledge of uncertainty quantification and sensitivity analysis to support new technologies, including use of Dakota and Python libraries
  • Knowledge of software quality program requirements and interface with configuration management of safety analysis tools and analyses
  • Knowledge of nuclear plant design codes and standards is highly desired
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of system code models using for example TRACE, RELAP, SAM, APROS
  • Working knowledge and experience with tools in the MOOSE framework preferred
  • Broad understanding of multi-physics of advanced reactor systems and how features in design connect to the safety case
  • Specific experience with nuclear power, safety analysis licensing and development is highly desired
  • Ability to identify, development, and track design basis information
  • Experience calculating instrument string uncertainties and working with setpoint methodologies
  • Experience developing, using, and updating technical specifications.

The salary range for this position is $166,700 to $208,400 for employees working onsite at our Alameda, CA headquarters. The range provided in this job posting represents the typical range or starting rate of candidates hired in California. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, the market data for your work location, and a comparison to other employees already in the role.
