As the Senior Database Engineer, you will administer, maintain, develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure the security and integrity of the County’s Oracle and SQL Server databases. In this role you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, build, upgrade, modify and operationally administer new and existing databases in support of critical enterprise applications.

Essential Functions

  • Lead the design, construction and management of complex databases. Administers the Microsoft SQL Server and/or Oracle database production and test environments on a day-to-day basis including backups, security, patches, replication and change management
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of Wake County databases
  • Implements data models and database designs, data access and table maintenance codes Designs and builds relational databases using Microsoft SQL Server and/or Oracle. Develops and lead strategies for data acquisitions, archive recovery and implementation of a database. Implements change control procedures
  • Coordinates production scheduling with other technical staff. Serves as technical lead and consults with business owners and developers during projects and implementation
  • Manages licenses and upgrades in the Microsoft SQL Server and/or Oracle environments
  • Performs analysis, planning and facilitation of data migrations and scripting to manipulate data
  • Resolves database performance issues, database capacity issues, replication and other distributed data issues
  • Performs platform backups, upgrades and installs. Provides continuous platform monitoring, maintenance and fine tuning of servers, tools and databases to ensure the highest level of data availability, integrity and security
  • Administers security, patches, configures replications and monitors scheduled jobs and performance
  • Participates in project meetings and dialogs regarding database related project components
  • Provides realistic estimates of specific project related tasks to the project manager
  • Provides prompt and clear communication of project task status and any related issues in project meetings and through email and phone dialogs
  • Mentoring of junior staff and contract DBA's
  • Stays current on SQL and/or Oracle platform environment technology upgrades and changes to ensure a stable and scalable SQL and/or Oracle platform for Wake County


Additional Requirements: Position is subject to 24-hour on call requirements.

NOTE: For positions with a remote work option, all Wake County Government remote workers must reside in one of the following states or districts: North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas or Virginia.

Required

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering or related field
  • Four years of experience in network or database design and administration
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

  • 3 years experience installing and supporting MS SQL Server 2008 - 2019 or Oracle versions 11.2 through Oracle 19C
  • 3 years extensive experience using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) or writing and reviewing Oracle PL/SQL
  • 3 years advanced SQL Coding skills for both ad hoc usage and creation of stored procedures and functions
  • 3 years experience using SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) or SQL Plus
  • 2 years experience using MS PowerShell or BASH shell languages
  • 2 years experience supporting both hosted and on-premises applications
  • Experience writing programs and scripts using the C# programming language/VB .Net or BASH

  • Working knowledge of MS SharePoint Working knowledge of Storage Array Network (SAN) technology

Hiring Range: 104,889 – 122,370

Market Range: 87,408.00 - 157,332.00
