Job description

Note: In this role you will be based in Hempel’s Headquarters, near Copenhagen, joining a dedicated R&D team of nine colleagues, hence please apply if you are in Denmark or ready to relocate to Denmark.

Are you passionate about developing innovative and sustainable coating solutions? Do you have extensive experience in the formulation, testing, and optimization of industrial paint? Do you want to help Hempel to grow by using current technologies to their full potential and helping to develop new ones?

If so, you might become our new colleague at Hempel.

In Hempel, we develop and manufacture coating solutions for the protective, decorative, marine, container, industrial and yacht segments. We partner with our customers and research institutions to find new ways to ensure that our customers’ assets last longer and perform better across their entire service lives.

Established in Denmark in 1915, Hempel is today a global company.

Here’s some of the other things you can look forward to

You will be able to use your research and technical background, as well as your formulation knowledge, to lead the development of novel coating solutions for the Energy and Infrastructure industries in this post. We want to maximise the performance and sustainability of existing coating technologies, such as epoxy and polyurethane coatings, while also developing new technologies that will determine the industry's future. You will work with both internal and external partners in this capacity, including R&D, commercial companies, suppliers, and academics.

As a senior coatings’ formulator, you will be responsible for:

  • Developing and improving coatings formulations for the Energy and Infrastructure industries, such as Oil & Gas or Wind Energy industries.
  • Develop new technologies enabling significant improvements in performance, durability and sustainability profile of coating products working together with internal and external collaborators such as universities and suppliers.
  • Evaluating the performance, durability, and aesthetics of coatings products using various analytical and physical methods.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving technical issues related to coatings formulation, production, and application.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams, such as sales, marketing, R&D, and quality control, to ensure customer satisfaction and product competitiveness.
  • Staying updated on the latest trends, technologies, and regulations in the coatings industry.

The successful candidate

Paint formulation is a science as well as an art. We anticipate that you will bring extensive understanding of coatings science and technology, skills to convert that fundamental understanding into technologies and coating formulation advances, as well as creativity and insight.

In your attitude to your work, you must be proactive and results-oriented. We value collaboration, and you are at ease working with both internal and external partners. This necessitates a positive attitude and genuine concern for others around you, while never losing sight of the overarching goal of our endeavors.

Moreover, you should have:

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in coatings formulation, preferably in the area of industrial protective coatings.
  • A strong knowledge of coatings chemistry, physics, and application techniques.
  • A creative and problem-solving mindset, with excellent attention to detail and quality.
  • A good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and in a team.
