Job description

Vannevar Labs builds next generation defense software for the public servants keeping our country safe.  As a team, we exist because we believe in public service, and we think that our democracy and government improve only if we put serious, collective effort into improving them, including the technology our government uses.

This mission has become urgent. Ukraine is engaged in a war for survival with Russia. China regularly flies nuclear-capable bombers into Taiwan and Japan’s airspace. The US and our allies are fighting a war of deterrence with woefully outdated technology. We build software to support these missions, including providing battlefield information to allies, identifying malign activity, and helping the US deter and deescalate conflict.

We are a profitable growth startup with some of the best defense investors in the world, including General Catalyst, DFJ Growth, Point72, and enterprise tech investors Costanoa and Felicis.

Senior Full Stack Engineer, Machine Learning

We are looking for a Senior Full Stack Engineer, Machine Learning to help identify build new machine learning services and products within our multi-terabyte data lake. You’ll be part of a cross-functional team that includes deep learning experts, software engineers, and officers from all branches of the military.  We also do something common in Silicon Valley tech companies but radical in the defense space: we develop and test products side-by-side with our users, including on US military bases and remote locations abroad. Our engineering culture is about empathizing with users and building software products that deliver maximum mission impact.

As a senior engineer, you are expected to take ownership and do whatever it takes to deliver game changing capabilities. You will drive key technical decisions and establish best practices for software engineering within your team. You’ll have a chance to build applications that leverage state of the art tools in Machine Learning and AI, to solve for mission-critical workflows.

What You’ll Do

  • Work on our LLM service and build usable interfaces and APIs for other engineers and end users
  • Architect efficient and reusable front-end systems that drive complex web applications in environments with performance and resource constraints.
  • Collaborate with Designers, Product Managers, Mission, and Software Engineers to integrate machine learning services with our user-facing products
  • Become an expert and point of contact for all things prompt-engineering
  • Build out demo products to pitch end customers on new machine learning approaches

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of software development building user-facing products. Mastery of JavaScript is a huge plus.
  • 2+ years of experience building responsive and performant web UIs. Mastery of front-end frameworks, like React, is a huge plus.
  • 2+ years of full stack development, including familiarity with relational databases (like PostGres), caching technologies (like Redis), and object stores (like S3).
  • 3+ years of backend engineering work with realtime and async applications
  • Previous knowledge of LLMs and prompt engineering is a plus, but willingness to learn and become an expert in this domain is also great
  • You must be a US resident or citizen.
Benefits:
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 100% remote - work from anywhere in the US
  • 401k matching
  • Mental benefits
  • Flexible work environment - you manage your workday
  • Pet and child care reimbursement during travel
  • Unlimited PTO
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $150,000 - $195,000 + equity + 401K match. Within the range, individual pay is determined by experience, relevant education, and/or training.

Vannevar Labs is an equal opportunity employer, and qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender perception or identity, national origin, age, marital status, protected veteran status, or disability status.

We encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply, even if you don't feel like you're a perfect fit. If you're passionate about contributing to our mission, we'd love to hear from you!
