Position Summary:

Apellis is seeking a seasoned learning and development professional with previous experience in  customer-facing roles, preferably in the ophthalmic space, for the position of Senior Manager, Commercial Learning, Ophthalmology.  It is an outstanding opportunity to make a significant impact across the commercial organization. 

The role will require a leadership mindset, strong knowledge of adult learning principles, excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to execute with rigor and agility,  think critically, and engage at a high level with cross-functional teams. You will partner closely with cross-functional teams within the ophthalmology function. This will be an individual contributor role.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Engage with internal and customer-facing team leaders within the commercial organization, including Brand, Commercial Operations, Medical, and Value, Access, and Policy (VAP) organization to execute learning strategies and solutions aligned with goals and objectives of the Commercial organization. 
  • Lead execution of new hire onboarding and day-to-day learning initiatives while developing new ways to enhance the learning experience for long-term optimization.
  • Collaborate with key internal stakeholders and external vendor partners to design learning curricula and training activities for customer-facing teams.
  • Proactively seek key stakeholder feedback, thinking holistically about business needs, learning gaps, and recommendations that support long-term success for customer-facing teams.
  • Build strong, positive relationships with business partners, functional area leaders, and cross-functional stakeholders to create synergies and ensure alignment with business objectives.
  • Work collaboratively across departments and with other learning partners to create and deliver educational materials across current and future indications and brands.
  • Partner with medical teams to ensure seamless transfer of scientific and medical information to commercial customer-facing teams.
  • Navigate the Promotional Review Committee (PRC) approval process for newly developed training content.
  • Ensure all training complies with Apellis values, code of practice and other relevant SOPs.
  • Manage all aspects of the learning management system (LMS), developing initiatives that provide structure, scalability, and solutions for the platform’s long-term functionality and utility.
  • Develop and deliver learning content for events such as POAs, NSMs, Product Launches, and Ad-hoc business initiatives.
  • Support the Director, Commercial Learning in executing the goals and objectives of the Commercial Learning department and help to identify knowledge and skills gaps, propose solutions to close gaps, and build capabilities over time.

Education, Registration & Certification:

  • BS/BA degree required

Experience:

  • 7+ years of biotech/pharma experience with a minimum of 2 years in a headquarter-based training and learning role
  • Experience in a customer-facing role such as sales, account management, and/or market access roles, preferred

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Deep understanding of the commercial space within the pharmaceutical/biotech ecosystem, behaviors of customers, and adult learning principles
  • Track record of delivering excellent end-to-end learning processes, including curriculum design and development and classroom facilitation
  • Passion for understanding and championing the needs of field teams to drive impact for customers as well as motivation and satisfaction for the customer-facing teams
  • Motivated to be a part of envisioning and building a global learning infrastructure that will support the immediate and long-term needs of Apellis
  • Ability to navigate and execute independently in a fast-paced, results-driven environment, managing through ambiguity
  • Commitment to collaboration and engagement, with a history of success working within in a matrix environment and with vendor partners
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence across functions and varying levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated integrity on the job, including an understanding of relevant rules and regulations

Travel Requirements:

  • Limited domestic travel, expected to be approximately 35% (e.g., field rides, meetings, HQ meetings)
