Job description

The Associate Forester will work with RPFs and other professionals on all aspects of field operations, with a focus on timberland management planning, THP/timber sale preparation, rural development projects, timber, and carbon inventories, and CA Air Resources Board Compliance Offset project verifications. Dependent upon skill level and experience, this position may manage projects to which he or she is suited. The position will be based in Grass Valley, CA, but extended travel, including camping, may be required. The option to work from home for completion of office work may be considered.

  • Lead and manage field work, including directing forestry technicians in the field.
  • Set goals for performance and deadlines in ways that comply with company’s plans and vision.
  • Organize workflow and ensure that employees understand their duties or delegated tasks.
  • Monitor employee productivity and provide constructive feedback and coaching when necessary.
  • Prepare and submit performance reports.
  • Make recommendations regarding promotions and performance to the Supervisor.
  • Help to hire and train new employees.
  • Ensure adherence to legal and company policies and procedures and undertake disciplinary actions if the need arises.
  • Regularly exercises discretionary decisions in the performance of his/her duties.
  • Preparation of Timber Harvesting Plans, Non-Industrial Timber Management Plans, cost share applications and other similar or related permits and exemptions, including field and document preparation.
  • Timber cruising and inventory reporting.
  • Administration of logging contracts.
  • Carbon inventory and analysis for project verifications throughout the country.
  • Must be committed to maintaining the confidentiality of all of employer (FRST) clients, fellow employees and project data and information.
  • Professional interaction with clients
  • B.S. in Forestry or closely related field
  • Applicant must possess or have the ability to obtain a California RPF license within 2 years
  • Working knowledge of CA Forest Practice Rules
  • A minimum of 3 years of related work experience
  • Previous supervisory experience required.
  • Organizational and leadership skills
  • Valid California driver’s license and clear driving record
  • Ability to navigate terrain with GPS or map and compass
  • Competency with Microsoft Office programs and ArcGIS
  • Creativity and interest in utilizing new technologies
  • Interest in being involved with a wide variety of project types and stages
  • Excellent written, oral communication, and interpersonal skills

Working conditions:

  • This position spends a lot of time working outdoors with extensive travel and camping.
  • The position occasionally requires working and/or traveling on weekends
  • Ability to drive vehicles and ATVs in a safe manner and in accordance with company policy
  • Ability to work safely, effectively, and respectfully with others and alone in steep, rugged terrain under
  • adverse weather conditions

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and carry the load in a pack or vest
  • Do repetitive tasks with few breaks
  • Work in adverse weather conditions including but not limited to high heat, rain, snow, smoke, and cold
  • temperatures
  • Walk, hike, or stand for extended periods of time
