Job description

Who We Are:

Carnegie Robotics partners with a variety of industry leaders to provide customized robotic solutions for any problem. Our expertise in building and deploying hardened solutions paired with our partners decades of expertise in an industry lead to very successful outcomes. We are not afraid to take on the challenges of any industry, and have applications in a wide variety of ways:  floor scrubbing, boating, logistics, industrial inspection, precision positioning, mining, off-road autonomy, and minesweeping.  Whether you already have an interest in robotics, or are just joining the field and are looking to find your “niche”, Carnegie Robotics is the place for you.

Who We’re Looking for:

Individuals who are interested, and ideally experienced, in some of the areas and topics we are passionate about. All skill levels and backgrounds are welcome. We have an amazing team of engineers from a variety of backgrounds who love to share their collective knowledge and experiences. We’ve had Electrical Engineers who started as interns in Production and Manufacturing, Software Engineers we found on Github, and Mechanical Engineers who are now Technical Program Managers. We’re about growth and providing opportunities for you as you move through you career.

What you’ll be doing:

As part of the Electrical Engineering team you will be responsible for the design, analysis, build, testing, and troubleshooting of complex robotics,  autonomy , and vision systems that must survive in extreme environments. This can take the form of developing printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs) for our custom camera systems, creating robotic systems by integrating CRL’s custom electronics with commercial off the shelf (COTS) hardware, or supporting the manufacturing of our products.

Applications include custom designed electronics, autonomous vehicle integration and support (off-road, military, and some commercial), after-market autonomy upgrades, and the integration of various perception sensors (stereo, LIDAR, etc).

CRL design efforts cover the full range of technical readiness levels from early technology demonstrators and prototypes all the way through volume manufacturing of our products at a rate of several thousands per year.  Regardless of the life cycle, and whether the emphasis is on safety or manufacturing yield, strong engineering rigor through deep theoretical knowledge, analysis, and testing are required in this position.

You will be responsible for all aspects of the design process, and will need to align your engineering methods to support the goals of the program.  This will vary between speed and cost over your career at CRL, but performance and quality will always be priority #1.  As you contribute to some of the most advanced robotic systems around, you will be supported by your teammates including a Technical Program Manager and other discipline experts in the fields of Mechanical, Systems, and Software Engineering.

What your day to day is:
  • As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will likely be the primary and lead electrical engineer on an effort.  For larger efforts you may be assisted by another electrical engineer, electrical engineering intern(s), and/or technicians in the execution of development tasks.
  • Partnering with your Technical Program Manager, you will work to understand the customer’s full needs, not just their stated ones, and then ensure the electrical design addresses those requirements.
  • On a per program basis you must find the appropriate balance between speed and optimization ranging from leveraging off the shelf electronic solutions and modules to fully custom designed electronics.
  • Your designs will take the form of custom printed circuit board assemblies and cable harnesses for power converters and power delivery, mixed signal systems, imaging sensors, motor drivers, processors/FPGAs/SoMs, audio, ethernet, CAN, USB, MIPI, and more.
  • You will frequently coordinate with your Mechanical Engineering colleagues on how to mount off the shelf and custom electronics to survive extreme vibration and shock, design for electrical heat dissipation in high operating temp/low air flow environments, and to develop both internal and external cabling to mechanical housings.
  • Through extensive testing of thermal, vibration, humidity, ESD, EMC, and other electrical fault conditions (open/short) you will validate your designs.
  • You will provide technical leadership and guidance to junior engineers, technicians, and the manufacturing department.  As part of this, you will first lead by example by actively soliciting design review input to your own designs and then reciprocating through peer reviews for others.
What You’ll Have:
  • Achieved Electrical Engineering mastery through some combination of a Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, significant work experience (7+ years), and/or relevant hobbyist/DIY projects.
  • Experience with Altium Designer or other similar EDA programs
  • Working knowledge of at least one programming language.
  • Experience with ERP systems.
  • Experience with engineering debug and analysis using tools such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, and signal generators.
  • Experience authoring design documentation: requirements documents, test specifications, technical memos, and hardware design specifications for fabrication and assembly.
  • The ability to drive tasks independently and communicate issues and needs clearly, while working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with working with supply chain and vendors.
How you’ll stand out:
  • You will be genuinely excited to work in an environment where your title does not limit your opportunity to contribute, learn and succeed.
  • You operate well as part of a cross discipline team working towards a goal, not as an individual contributor doing a task.
  • You have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced engineering/manufacturing environment.
  • You are willing to travel occasionally to help test and install the product of your labors at customer locations.
What you get out of it:
  • Top of the line UPMC health coverage with FSA or HSA options
  • Comprehensive dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Fidelity 401(k) plan with employer match
  • Free catered lunch every day with a vegan option
  • Flexible work hours including work-from-home options
  • 33 Days of PTO (including holidays and floating holidays)
  • Comp time for company travel
