Job description

With four manufacturing plants in the UK, Prysmian is well placed to support its home and export customers for Energy and Telcom cables and accessories. Prysmian is market leader and "innovation driver" in all major Energy and Telecom cables business activities. In the UK Prysmian manufactures energy cables from low voltage to extremely high voltage for land applications.

The High Voltage Laboratory at the Eastleigh site is a central resource for Prysmian’s worldwide manufacturing of high voltage power transmission cable.  The laboratory typically tests extra high voltage cable to 1m volts and is the only facility of its kind in the UK.

The main purpose of the trainee role is to learn the design and testing principles associated with HV cables and accessories within the Bishopstoke High Voltage Laboratory, to assist with the setting up tests to international specifications and to record test results accurately.

Key Activities and Responsibilities

  • To learn the safe operation of complex electrical, mechanical and materials test equipment.
  • To assist with the setup of tests, including process control instrumentation.
  • Reading, interpreting and becoming familiar with international testing standards. 
  • To assist in the implementation of electrical tests as defined in relevant test procedures / international standards.
  • Assisting with general laboratory housekeeping.
  • Monitoring of tests & accurately recording results.
  • Control and purchasing of materials.
  • To assist in the management of annual calibrations of test equipment.
  • To assist in plant maintenance activities.
  • To undertake additional training and education with a requirement to attend college / university on a day release basis.
  • Preparation of technical approval documentation for submission to customers.
  • Writing technical reports.

Skills and Experience

  • Technical qualification (ideally BTec or A level) in Engineering or Mathematics / Science.
  • Good computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • Self-motivated, good manual & practical skills, high safety awareness
  • Highly organised and able to work on own with minimal supervision
  • Flexible working hours approach

Location details

This role is based in our offices near the Eastleigh town centre. The address is Prysmian Cables & Systems Limited, Chickenhall Lane, Eastleigh, SO50 6YU. There are good transport links to Eastleigh and the site is approximately 15 minutes walk from the railway station. We are able to offer free car parking next to our offices.
