Job description

The Missouri Department of Mental Health is dedicated to the prevention, treatment, and public understanding of mental illness and developmental disabilities. Role Description**

Provide training to stakeholders including support coordinators, providers, and individuals/designated representatives on the implementation process of Self-Directed Supports. The specialist will provide guidance, assuring the individual understands that self-directed supports includes a cadre of supports to include natural supports (family, friends, churches, co-workers, etc.), the individual budget process, monitoring and other quality enhancement activities, financial management systems and other business practices that assure successful support. **

What You’ll Do**

    • Implement programs using your understanding of SDS service definitions as outlined in the Medicaid Waiver and ensure individuals/designated representatives, support coordinators and guardians understand the roles and responsibilities of each.
    • Promote SDS programs according to Department Operating Regulations (DOR), Code of State Regulations (CSR), Department Directives and policies.
    • Understand Medicaid service documentation requirements.
    • Provide guidance to individuals and designated representatives in regards to SDS
    • Attend meetings as requested with support coordinators and individuals to offer guidance for SDS
    • Attend weekly and monthly meetings with SDS Lead.
    • Provides training and technical support to support coordinators, support brokers and other stakeholders on the implementation process for SDS
    • Provide guidance and assistance to support coordinators and individuals on budget revisions and use of budget tools, as needed.
    • Provide information and training to promote the concept of self-direction and self-determination to individuals/designated representatives, guardians, and support coordinators.
    • Assist with regional transfers to ensure timesheets and billing are in place and services are authorized to begin in the new location on the correct date. Coordinate changes and enrollment with the Fiscal Management Service (FMS) regarding change of address and other needed information.
    • Assist individuals in SDS & self-determination advocacy, being a support to Self-Advocacy groups.
    • Develop, facilitate, and monitor improvement plans for SDS when issues are identified requiring correction.
    • Enter and update all improvement plan data on SDS SharePoint.

  • Be able to communicate well both verbally and in writing
  • Understand Medicaid service documentation requirements
  • Understand and apply SDS service definitions
  • Participate in SDS Workgroup efforts to continually refine services and model best practices.
  • Understand services and supports provided by other agencies such as Vocational Rehabilitation, Division of Heath and Senior Services, Bureau of Special Health Care Needs; Independent Living Centers, generic community services, etc.
  • Be able to maintain and evaluate data and data systems as required by the Division of DD
