Equitable is seeking an experienced individual life underwriter to join the Underwriting Excellence team in the role of Underwriting Consultant.

Equitable underwriting consultants are key to the development of underwriters. We are a group of highly competent and diverse underwriters who train, coach & mentor new and experienced underwriters. Underwriting Consultants collaborate with other underwriting teams to support training, technological advancement, and process improvement. The Underwriting Excellence team accomplishes its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of process and procedures and, to develop underwriters, thereby enhancing the underwriter and customer experience.

Equitable’s Underwriting Excellence team is seeking an initiative-taking, experienced underwriter to join our team. In this role, you will focus on providing support to teams within the underwriting department. **

Job Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:**

  • Develop, coach and mentor Life Underwriters.
  • Review Life Underwriter Quality Assurance results, identify any coaching opportunities, and update/maintain training tracking tool.
  • Coordinate with Trainer on any Training Plans and conduct training as needed.
  • Collaborate as needed with Manager, Medical Directors, Trainer, Financial Due Diligence or Audit Team.
  • Manage Referrals/2nd Reviews within expected timeframes characterized by sound underwriting assessments.
  • Provide clear, concise documentation and communication of consultations and decisions
  • When applicable, may assist with underwriting production.
  • Meet individual team member targeted training and development goals.
  • Coach Underwriters on best verbal and written communications.
  • Conduct field force training sessions as needed.
  • Attend customer conferences/meetings and present and/or facilitate customer engagements as needed.
  • Participate in industry educational opportunities and Equitable specific courses.
  • Participate as needed in any special projects; to include organizational assessments, process improvement, IT integration, or other strategic initiatives; develop actions plans and execute successfully within agreed upon delivery dates.

The base salary range for this position is $85,000-$127,000. Actual base salaries vary based on skills, experience, and geographical location. In addition to base pay, Equitable provides compensation to reward performance with base salary increases, spot bonuses, and short-term incentive compensation opportunities. Eligibility for these programs depends on level and functional area of responsibility.

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years current life underwriting experience with proven job performance and industry related education success.
  • Current Authority limit $10,000,000+ or demonstrated experience/ability to achieve.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree
  • EKG Certification
  • FALU and FLMI
  • Life experience to include 65+ and Large Case Experience and/or demonstrated ability to assess large complex cases both medically and financially.
  • Life underwriting knowledge: medical terminology, medicine, medical science and symptomology, non-medical and financial risk selection methodologies, MIB, legal and regulatory limitations, contractual provisions, products, morbidity and mortality, underwriting guidelines, manuals, and operating system. Proficient in all Underwriting Systems, UW Websites, and Manuals.
  • Established background in impaired risk and financial underwriting.
  • Participating on a local Underwriting Association Board or other industry related function, industry related presentations, meeting facilitation.

Insurance Legal and Regulatory Environment: Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations; ability to comply with these laws and regulations in insurance industry practices and activities.

Communicating Complex Concepts: Knowledge of effective presentation tools and techniques to ensure clear understanding; ability to use summarization and simplification techniques to explain complex technical concepts in simple, clear language appropriate to the audience.

Coaching Others: Knowledge of coaching and mentoring concepts and methods; ability to encourage, motivate, and guide individuals in learning and improving effectiveness.

Managing Multiple Priorities: Knowledge of effective self-management practices; ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities, making effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation.

Collaborating: Knowledge of collaborative techniques; ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner.

Problem Solving: Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations.
