Job description

The SC Johnson College of Business:

Leading at the intersection of people, business, and technology, the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business is one of the most comprehensive business schools in the nation and includes many areas of expertise not found in any other leading institution. The college is comprised of the university’s three accredited business schools, each of which is recognized as among the best in higher education: the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management, and the Cornell Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Administration. Our academic research; industry and community engagement; and undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs all reflect the future of business: flexible, collaborative, and cross-disciplinary. The college community includes 232 research faculty, 46,000 alumni, and nearly 3,300 undergraduate, professional, and graduate students. The SC Johnson College of Business has an unparalleled resource base from which to draw—within the college, Cornell Tech in New York City, and Cornell University broadly.

The New York FarmNet Program with the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business, Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, supports farm families and agricultural businesses by providing financial and family/personal consulting to improve the farm business and family communications.

Our Financial Consultant Openings:

New York FarmNet is actively recruiting for part-time Financial Consultants in the Albany, NY area.

This is a temporary, non-benefits eligible, 19 hours or less per week temporary position with an annual reappointment based on job performance as well as approval and funding availability. Pay rate is $32.50 per hour. Flexible scheduling is available for this position.

NY FarmNet Financial Consultants provide financial counseling and services to clients who request support in identifying and solving problems within a farm family or agricultural business. This includes making an initial assessment, assisting in identifying, gathering, and analyzing data and information to identify problems, assisting in identifying and prioritizing alternative solutions based on the farm’s needs and resources; and assisting in developing and enacting an action plan based on the farm’s needs and resources to drive impactful alternative solutions. Consultants will work remotely and will be required to travel to farms to set up in person meetings with farmers.

Financial assessments include performing partial budget analyses, creating pro-forma income statements, cash flow statements, and balance sheets, and utilizing data & analytics to inform decision making. Knowledge of the local agricultural economy and businesses, including alternative resources available, is critical to success in this position.

Additional key responsibilities for the Financial Consultant include:

  • Providing timely response to phone messages or e-mails so cases can be assigned appropriately. The client requesting services from NY FarmNet is to be contacted by phone within 24 hours of the case assignment so as to obtain preliminary information and arrange for a meeting (phone/video conference, face to face) as deemed necessary by the consultant.
  • Maintaining records of services provided to farm families. Timely and accurately detailed case notes must be entered into the NY FarmNet database after each meeting.
  • Engaging with local communities through program outreach such as hosting a booth at a farm show, making a brief program presentation at a local agency or business, or collaborating with agri-service providers on making a workshop presentation.
  • Attending training and professional development, provided by NY FarmNet as three in-service training session a year, generally in spring, summer, and fall. Consultants are also expected to seek out and participate in outside professional development opportunities related to their responsibilities, with consultation and approval of NY FarmNet office staff.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science in agricultural economics, business, finance, or related fields.
  • Significant, successful experience performing farm financial and management analyses, working with lenders and directly with agricultural producers.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Zoom, Microsoft Word and Excel, and the ability to learn data entry into the FarmNet data base.
  • Strong communication skills
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to travel within the state. Travel time is paid and reimbursed at the IRS mileage rate.
  • Experience working directly in agriculture or agribusiness is strongly preferred.

* Visa sponsorship and relocation assistance are not provided for this position.
