Your missions

At the ORR Children's Shelter, in association with Teneo Linguistics Company, we understand that navigating a new culture and environment can be challenging. We're in search of a dedicated Qeqchi Bilingual Specialist/Cultural Navigator who can bridge this gap for our children. Your role will provide more than just translation; it's about fostering understanding, mentorship, and a deeper cultural connection, helping children adjust and integrate while preserving the richness of their heritage.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide precise translation and interpreting services, both in person and over phone/video, ensuring effective communication across different languages.
  • Meet with children, offering mentorship and guidance as they navigate through the challenges of a new cultural environment.
  • Act as a key resource for program staff, offering insights and technical assistance related to cultural practices, helping ensure services are culturally sensitive and appropriate.
  • Foster a cultural connection with the youth, serving as a trusted figure with whom they can share, relate, and learn.
  • Work collaboratively with case managers, clinicians, and other staff, enhancing the overall care provided to children.

Requirements

  • Must be fully bilingual, exhibiting fluency and comfort in both English and Qeqchi.
  • Personal lived experience as a refugee/newcomer to the U.S. or possesses relevant cultural experience is highly valued.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with an ability to connect with and mentor children from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team, providing insights and recommendations based on cultural understanding.
  • Prior experience in translation or interpreting is an asset, though not mandatory.
